Cardinal Rigali: Obama stem cell order 'a sad victory of politics over science and ethics’

Barbara McGiguan on Open Line on EWTN also discussed this decision, and she made the comparison to Pilate having Jesus scourged and crucified to 'appease' the crowd.  Obama is appeasing the people to which he is beholden.  He sure can't justify this decision scientifically.  Embryonic stem cells DON'T WORK, and they  destroy life.

Following President Obama’s latest executive order lifting restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, both Cardinal Justin Rigali and the Colorado bishops released a statement saying that the decision to lift restrictions on embryonic stem cell research shows a disregard for the dignity of human life.

Cardinal Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, began his statement today by calling Obama’s executive order “a sad victory of politics over science and ethics."

He explained that embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) is wrong due to the fact that it destroys “innocent human life” by “treating vulnerable human beings as mere products to be harvested,” and also noted that the executive order “disregards the values of millions of American taxpayers who oppose research that requires taking human life.”

And he's not the only one to define Obama's decision that way:

Just after President Obama announced his executive order lifting restrictions on embryonic stem cell research on Monday, Congressmen Chris Smith (R-NJ) held a press conference suggesting that Obama’s decision was politically based rather than by studying the latest scientific breakthroughs.

Rep. Smith began his Monday statement by noting that during a time of impressive breakthroughs in adult stem cell research, the President is forcing “taxpayers to subsidize the unethical over the ethical, the unworkable over what works, and hype and hyperbole over hope.”

“Human embryo destroying stem cell research is not only unethical, unworkable, and unreliable, it is now demonstrably unnecessary.”
