Saying that the previous policy had forced "a false choice between sound science (embryonic has produced NO results...and that's 'sound science'?) and moral values," President Barack Obama signed an executive order March 9 overturning former President George W. Bush's limits on federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. "False Choice"? Now Obama is forcing taxpayers to fund the destruction of life. That is NO choice.Obama also urged Congress to consider further expansion of funding for such research, including the creation of new embryonic stem-cell lines, but said he would work to ensure that "our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction."
He said a "majority of Americans -- from across the political spectrum, and of all backgrounds and beliefs -- have come to a consensus that we should pursue" embryonic stem-cell research.
Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, had encouraged Obama not to change the policy on funding of embryonic stem-cell research, saying it "could be a terrible mistake -- morally, politically and in terms of advancing the solidarity and well-being of our nation's people."
