- building a traditional (i.e. "pre-Vatican II") Church (he calls it Catholic, but it is not in Communion with the Catholic Church).
- Producing a quality religious film like "Passion of the Christ"
It leads people, his fans, to expect certain behavior from him. In other words, he sets himself up as an example to others.
When Mel does things like:
He just shows everyone how hypocritical he is.

I read about this a few days ago for the first time. My reaction was the same - in a word, Sad. He is so identifiably Catholic and yet he is NOT. Unfortunately, non-Catholics don't understand the distinction.
I agree with everything except there is NOTHING wrong with a traditional Catholic mass. The mass of all the ages. However, if his specific church is not in communion (run) by the Church then that's a problem.
