Scott Roeder, the vigilante militia activist who is allegedly responsible for killing late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller, has been charged with first-degree murder in his shooting death. Roeder has no connections with pro-life groups and has been described by family as having a mental illness. The 51-year-old Kansas man appeared during a court hearing on Tuesday via a video feed from his cell at the Sedgwick County Jail
Roeder appeared in a red jumpsuit and had a copy of the charge papers in front of him on a podium.
His conversation with Judge Ben Burgess was short and mostly consistent of him inquiring about a public defender.
"And I'll obviously be hearing from one of those lawyers between now -- or do you know how long it will be before I hear from one of those lawyers?" Roeder said, according to an AP report.
