Pro-Life Women's Group Mourns the Passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver

I did not know that Eunice had maintained her pro-life beliefs. May she rest in peace.

Although other members of the Kennedy family abandoned their pro-life beliefs as their political stock rose, Eunice Kennedy Shriver never did. And for that, a pro-life women's group that previously honored her is mourning the passing of the woman who founded Special Olympics.

Shriver died this morning at the age of 88 surrounded by her family and she is survived by her husband Sargent Shriver, a former Vice Presidential nominee.

Together the Shrives had five children and twenty-one grandchildren.

Shriver, a lifelong pro-life Democrat, was the sister of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy, and Senator Edward Kennedy.

But she was honored by Feminists for Life of America in 1998 as a "Remarkable Pro-Life Woman."

When she received the award, FFLA president Serrin Foster tells LifeNews.com, "her husband phoned the office and asked us to send over a stack of copies for his family and friends. He was delighted that we recognized her in this meaningful way."

"Her legacy will live on in our work and especially in the work of Special Olympics," Foster says.

I met Eunice Shriver in the airport in Washington, D.C. in the early 70's...actually, I was seated reading a newspaper and changed my crossed legs from left to right and kicked a woman going by. I kicked her hard enough for her to yell and I was shocked to see I had drawn blood. I immediately went to her assistance but was stopped by several Secret Service Men. It was then that I recognized her. She smiled, called off the dogs, and ran to catch her flight. Her husband, Sergeant Shriver, was running on the Vice-Presidential ticket at the time.

Often times my wife and I would run into her, along with Jackie and Ethel at the McDonalds there in Rockville, MD. with a boat-load of Kennedy kids! They could fill a McDonald's with just their family! They were down-to-earth, really nice people when they were out in the public, nothing at all like our current occupants !!!!
