How painful it is when we hear that someone famous 'used to be Catholic'. Little else hurts the soul as much, especially when you find out that they 'found' Jesus someplace else.

I think it's a rather sad excuse to simply blame the liberal crowd. Who is the liberal crowd and how did they get there? Perhaps we were not vigilant enough, holy enough, failed ourselves to show the beauty of the Church! The early Christian church had far more against them at the beginning and yet the faith spread because of the conviction and sheer remarkable difference, joy, fire, love of the early believers. It's much easier to view as an enemy who should be our mission field. Jesus Himself granted the church protection from error and perpetuity. We have all the grace we need and He is with us always. Therefore, the failure is in large part ours - if there are lost opportunities, we should ask ourselves where WE were. How many "liberals" are we friends with and/or witnesses to?
